Hello,

I am looking for a copy of the Castle Bromwich Adverister from Friday 19th 1956. The reason I am looking for this is because my Granparents are on page 5 of that edition on their wedding day.

I live in Ireland, so I have tried to google the paper, but i am not able to find anything on the net.

I am hoping that someone from the local community would be able to help me or guide me in finding this piece of my history.

Thank you!

Gillian

Hi Gilliam

Good news, I have found that Birmingham Central Library  has a bound copy of the Castle Bromwich Advertiser, 1955-1963 in their archives. However, due to relocation of the library in the city they can't guarantee that archive is available to view at the moment.

Unfortunatley due to the thinness of the paper they can't take photos from it. However, they will allow a photograph to be taken with no flash.

I know that's not much use to you living in Ireland but If you want, I am happy to check with the library if the paper is available to view. If so I will go to the city and take a photgraph for you. I can't promise the quality will be top class but I'll do my best. We can arrange hot to get it to you later. I suggest by email but we can arrange that later. No need to publish you email address here.

If you want me to do this let me have your grandparent's details and dates.

Regards

Mike

Mike,

I am speachless, I cannot thank you enough for your kind offer/suggestion.

My Grandparents names are Ronald S Myers and Elizabeth Dunne.  They were married on Saturday 13th Oct 1956.

On Friday Oct 19th, there is a small article and picture on page 5 with a headline of a "Bride Keeping her promise" (I am 99% sure of the page and headline, apologies if there are some differences).

Both my Grandparents have passed a long time ago, so this would be a great piece of my past to have.

Please let me know how you get on and hopefully we can chat soon.

Kindest Regards,

Gillian

Hi Gillian

I will contact the library and see if the archive is available to view at the moment. If it is I'll pop into the city and see what I can do. If not, I'm afraid we'll have to wait until it is.

Regards

Mike

Hi Gillian

The advertiser is available to view and I have made a provisional appointment for Friday 6th July to go and see it and take a few photos. I hope I can obtain a couple of good pictures for you.

Hopefully the date I've asked for will be available. They require at least four working days notice as they will have to get the document out of the archives to save me waiting.

Regards

Mike

Hi Gillian

I have had my request to visit the Library on Friday confirmed. I have asked this website owner to forward you my email address. If that doesn't work we will have to find another way.

I won't be spending anything just time. I will have a free ride to the city on the bus.

Regards

Mike

I managed to obtain a selection of photographs of the picture and article in the Castle Bromwich Advertiser of Gillian's grandparent's wedding in 1956. I also went to photograph the house they lived in after they married, in Pear Tree Road, Shard End, and The Raven where the reception was held.

I asked the current owner of the house if she minded if I took a photo, she replied "did I used to live there?". I told her the story and she invited me in to take a photograph in the back garden too. While I was taking the photographs she went into the house and came back with a card dated 1956-57 issued by Guardian Angels Church for parishioners to use when collecting money in their street. She told me the card was in the house when she moved in 20 years and she didn't like to throw it away as it may mean something to someone, she had good foresight.. The card hadn't been used but had remained in the house for over 55 years. She gave it to me to pass on to Gillian's family.

So it's thanks to this website that Gillian's family have been re-united with a part of their family history.
