Solihull Council has published its draft Countryside strategy for consultation. It can be viewed on the Solihull Council website Quote from the website: "Our strategy aims to take a comprehensive view of the key issues facing the countryside, complementing the relevant land-use policiesand proposals of the emerging Local Development Framework (LDF). Key areas: Climatechange – the countryside needs to adapt to and mitigate for climatechange. Measures which may need to be considered are carbon storagewith increases in woodland, biofuel and biomass production, flood protection and attenuation. Changes in the CommonAgricultural Policy (CAP) aimed at reducing agricultural surpluses, resulting in land coming out of agricultural production leading to farmdiversification. Living and working within thecountryside; as the rural population increases, affordable housing, rural businesses and home working needs to be encouraged. Biodiversity conservation; wehave a duty to ‘have regard, so far as is consistent with the properexercise of these functions, to the purpose of conserving biodiversity’. Natural resources; we need anunderstanding of ecosystem goods and services. There is recognitionthat a healthy natural environment is indispensible to current andfuture economic prosperity. The development of renewable energy is being nationally encouraged." | |
