REME in Castle Bromwich - Can you Help?

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 6:02 AM

Can you help identify the building in the photograph and whether it still exists or has been demolished? Does anyone know anything about the REME Workshop unit which was located in Castle Bromwich 1945-1946?

The photograph and request for information were supplied by a user of this site who is researching her father's WW2 war service record. He was an Officer in the REME and served in India and Burma. When he returned home at the end of 1945 he was transferred to the No 4 Vehicle Group Workshop REME. This unit was located at Castle Bromwich until it was disbanded in May 1946. It is believed that Major Robert Titley was the officer in charge of this REME unit. The photograph shows him and fellow officers outside a building dated 1908 any help identifying this building or gaining more information on REME in Castle Bromwich or Major Titley would be appreciated. There was a R.E.M.E. workshop in Hurst Lane the British Legion club is built on the corner of the site . The concrete wall along Hurst Lane was the perimeter of the workshop and it was demolished to make way for the houses that now occupy the site in the 1960 s.
