Silhillians with Irish backgrounds are invited to join a new family history group.
The group, organised by local resident, Phyllis Davies, and supported by Solihull Council, will meet for the first time on Tuesday 15 February, 10am, at Solihull Central Library. Anyone who is in the process of researching their Irish family heritage or would like to start should come along to find out about the group.
It is hoped that members will regularly meet up to exchange ideas and methods of research.
Group members, like all Solihull residents, will also be able to access, for free, the Ancestry website from any of the library’s computers. This site allows visitors to look at a huge range of information, including birth, marriage and death, census and military records.
Cabinet Member for Community Services, Councillor Graham Craig said: “Researching history can be very difficult and time consuming especially if your family tree extends abroad. The new group will give a helping hand to those who want to learn more about their Irish heritage.
“We have helped set up a variety of history groups in the borough and also provide a range of resources at our libraries, which have been extremely popular with residents who want to trace their family history.”
Phyllis Davies said: “I’ve been researching my family tree for a few years now and have found it a really addictive hobby. I am really looking forward to helping other people get started and advance their research. Often with these things you can get to a certain point and don’t know where else to look for information, so hopefully the group members will also support each other and share ideas.”
