Today (Sunday November 14th) is World Diabetes Day, a worldwide initiative designed to bring together millions of people in over 160 countries to raise awareness of diabetes, including children and adults affected by diabetes, healthcare professionals, healthcare decision-makers and the media.
World Diabetes Day takes place on November 14th every year, a date chosen because it marks the birthday of Frederick Banting, the man, who along with Charles Best, is credited with discovering insulin in 1921.
2010 marks the second year of the five-year focus on 'Diabetes education and prevention", the theme selected by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization for World Diabetes Day 2009-2013.
One of the key objectives of the campaign is to raise awareness of the warning signs of Diabetes and to disseminate information to those at high risk.
