Starz! Presents Christmas by Candlelight

Posted on December 14, 2009 at 3:13 PM

The Christmas show is a time honoured tradition, for many years my own family spent the run up to Christmas in Florida watching the professionally produced shows provided by Disney and Universal Studios. This year has been somewhat different, we're spending December at home in Castle Bromwich and are spending our time viewing the productions which our own community has to offer.

I have been to a few productions by Starz! Performing Arts School and never been disappointed, but even I was surprised by the lavish preparations that had transformed Castle Bromwich Junior School into a Christmas Wonderland. Technology provided Mother Nature with a helping hand as guests arrived through an avenue of light strewn trees to a local snow storm close to the entrance to the school's reception area. Inside the decorations were equally as lavish with Christmas trees surrounding the hall. As usual the show was professionally produced and delivered, with some really astounding performances from the young students.

But, what made this performance of Christmas by Candlelight so much fun and entertaining was the young cast's enthusiasm and spirit. As with most amateur performances with young people there were times when things did not go entirely to plan, but Creative Director and script writer Gavin Prime has the uncanning ability to pen scripts which leave the audience wondering whether forgotten lines or missed cues are scripted comedy moments or a momentary lapse of concentration. It also says much about the confidence of the young people involved that they are able to disguise such moments with such finesse and skill.

The evening was full of memorable performances, so it's difficult to limit this review to just a few. All the young performers seemed at ease on the stage whether singing, dancing or delivering comic lines. Gavin Prime left the audience roaring with laughter at his hilarious Christmas Ballet and fetching costume. Other highlights include the Toilet Twins, Eggsperts and the incredible rendition of Santa Baby which was clearly enjoyed by audience and performers alike. The energy and creativity that the young cast brought to the stage will never be forgotten and their support of each other was noticable and inspiring.

As the production reached its finale the entire cast came to the stage with candles singing their version of White Christmas. As snow fluttered from the rafters, the audience started to join in with the singing and it was hard to not be moved by the heart warming magical atmosphere and the winter wonderland that was created in the school hall. So ended Starz! Chrsitmas production bringing a fitting end to a show that again surpassed all expectation, carrying on a tradition of excellence and unforgettable performances.

Reassuring to hear some good news about young people instead of just tales of asb. Well done to all involved. Could we have more activities like this in Castle Bromwich that develop the young and occupy their time productively ?Might stop some of the holigan element if they were to take part in some way. Why are these performances not more widely publicised? More people need to know that young people aren't all bad and see it for themselves.

Thank you for these positive comments, I run Starz!, it runs on donations and is non profit making, we can't usually afford advertising, we paid £50 each for poster boards and more for the posters that go on them, we put them up in the usual places and the council come and take them away, we cant afford to keep losing money and so at the moment our shows tend to be just word of mouth.
We have a 100% pass rate in RADA and LAMDA exams, brilliant dancers, even members of the British Dance Team. We also teach technical, lighting, camera and theatre and have many success stories.

We greatly appreciate your comments, it's very difficult at the moment to keep going through the recession and everyone involved will be very pleased that you enjoyed the performance.

Happy Christmas

My friend took part in this. Said she had a great time. There's lots of theatre and dance schools around, but Starz is free and my friend said it's loads of fun and not as serious as some she's tried.

This site is a revelation. I've lived in Castle Brom for years and had no idea there was so many Christmas events going on. Isn't it about time that something was done by the Council to let us know, after all they take our money and then expect us to provide everything ourselves so people like Starz rely on donations. Time we got something back I think.

Well done to all who took part. Sorry I didn't see it. Photos are wonderful - looks like a good time was had by all.

The only really cost effective way to do this so that the whole community sees it are posters in the streets.
However I think the council's hands are tied by some ancient law that lets fairs advertise anywhere up to a certain sized board but there doesn't seem to be a law for community events/children's events etc

It's the borough council who have to police it not the parish council I think, correct me if I'm wrong.

I think you can have posters anywhere and seemingly any size if they're portable and on wheels but we can't afford a trailer just yat and then we'd need three. Maybe a generator and projector in a van projecting onto the side of a white building? They do that in Coventry for the Belgrade pantomime, they project onto the side of the police headquarters.

I think we all need to be more inventive!

Todays joke:- How do you get a big man out of bed? Piece of cake!

I've opened a discussion topic in the forum on publicising charitable events and transferred the comments from thi8s post there, as this seems to be a topic of concern. I've alos put a link there to Solihull MBC's website with details of their policy on this.

Gavin - The children were truly fantastic in the show. I know that the show was child led and that you had very little time to teach or prepare, but you wouldn't have known on the night. They were all Starz!

Hope everybody has a fantastic Christmas and an even better New Year.
