Community Project Unearths Buried Graves

Posted on August 15, 2010 at 2:21 PM

It's been deteriorating for years, but the closed graveyard by St Mary & St Margaret Church Castle Bromwich is getting a facelift thanks to the Castle Bromwich Community Project. During the space of four days 30 volunteers cleared brambles, over grown bushes and weeds to reveal long hidden graves.

The Castle Bromwich Community Project worked in Partnership with the Castle Bromwich Youth & Community Centre and Castle Bromwich & District Lions Club and were assisted by local residents and members of the local Neighbourhood Police Team. Young people working on the clear-up researched the planting schemes of the Commonwealth War Graves and planted small shrubs and perennials behind the headstones of war graves and the graves of pilots who died on duty whilst serving at the Castle Bromwich Aerodrome.

The clear-up of the graveyard is ongoing and there will be another 4 day clear-up during the October half term when it is hoped to clear a large area of brambles and plant spring bulbs. The history of the graveyard is also being researched and information gathered about the lives of the people buried there which will be made available to the public.

I have witnessed the good/hard work being done in this much neglected graveyard.
Apparently, it is classified as a closed graveyard.
Which to you & I means that neither the SMBC or the church take responsibility for its upkeep!
But, like the proverbial Phoenix our community group leaders have risen to the challenge under the banner of the Castle Bromwich Community Project and have join forces to establish a long term intergenerational collaboration that will aim to restore this graveyard to its original good standing.
My congratulations to Mrs Terrie Knibb who is the chairman of the Project & the driving force behind its creation.
